"Given the glut of instructional books, DVDs, and other technical material on Victor Wooten, his new biography, Me and My Bass Guitar, is a welcome change of pace. Author/novelist Paul R. Hargett, a martial arts friend of Victor's, is not a musician, which results in a fresh perspective on the man we know best for his incredible musicianship, and over-the-top technique...it's fascinating to follow his (Hargett's) Taoist approach, in which he brings to light the order and wisdom of Wooten's life, and the way it harmonizes with the universe as a whole"                                                       Bass Player Magazine

"Being a friend of Wooten's, Hargett had the unique opportunity to become close with the Wooten family and compile telling interviews that paint a broad picture of Wooten's life and musical career with a singular level of clarity and detail. Me and My Bass Guitar is a must-read for any Wooten fan--but more importantly, it captures the essence of a modern-day bass genius in a way that will hopefully convey Wooten's story of life and music for generations to come."                                         Relix Magazine

"Author Paul Hargett has produced a biography of Wooten, which, much like Victor's own music, extends above and beyond the common trivializing of most musician biographies. Writing in a relaxed, conversational style, Hargett creates a work which is a joy to read and metaphorically captures Wooten's own laid-back style...For a musician, a player of any instrument, this book is a must-read. Hargett and Wooten remind us that our lives are not made of music, but rather that music is made of our lives."     TalkBass.com

"Hargett's book is written in a friendly, easygoing manner, which fits his subject matter. That said, he still touches on some harder subjects like racism and the exploitation of musicians. Wooten's world is bigger than that though, and once you read his story, you'll understand not only the man he is, but also the gift he's given the world of music."                                      Fearless Reviews

"Me and My Bass Guitar is an exceptional book about a truly exceptional man. Paul Hargett tells Victor's story with insight, clarity and reverence. An absolute must have for your music library."                                     Vinnie Fodera of Fodera Guitars

Welcome to the web presence of the exciting new biography of the acclaimed bassist, Victor Lemonte Wooten.

Victor Lemonte Wooten is an incredible bass player, one of the best, if not THE best on this planet. This is something not entirely unknown to those involved in the world of music and a growing number of fans around the globe. What is truly amazing is the person behind the unearthly music. Critically acclaimed novelist, Paul R. Hargett, turns his talent for story-telling to this wonderful biography of a truly gifted and spiritual man. Perhaps best known for his work as bassist for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Victor has won nearly every major award possible for his art including multiple Grammys and international recognition on a level not normally seen by instrumental musicians.

Vic has played and recorded with too many artists to list from every corner of the globe and every genre of the musical spectrum. His unique musical interpretation has gotten the attention of critics, musicians and listeners for decades, but it is his distinctive, spiritual personality that touches the hearts of those he meets. The bassist is involved with the martial arts, nature and survival studies, tracking, magic, writing and philosophy. He teaches students from around the globe to become both better musicians and better people and is constantly expanding his own musical boundaries and life studies. Me and My Bass Guitar offers a special, in-depth, perspective of the life and ideas of Victor Wooten in a new and insightful way. The book is truly an innovative work about an extremely innovative individual and is quite unlike any biography you will ever read.

Me and My Bass Guitar is divided into two books, the first, called The Path, chronicles the life of Victor Wooten beginning with his early years as one of five brothers born into a military family. The book tells how the musical journey began for the Wootens on the Island of Hawaii and how Victor began playing professionally at age five. The work moves from there, via twelve chapters, relating the amazing factors which combined to shape the life of one of the worlds most acclaimed musical talents. The history is related through stories, photographs and in-depth interviews with Victor, his family, friends and some of the most respected musicians on the global stage.

Part two of the book is called Five Rings and takes a closer look at many of the factors which shape Victor's life and music. There are chapters about the martial arts and their influence on Victor and his music, tracking and Victor's biannual Bass and Nature Camp, (Victor is an accomplished survivalist and tracker trained by noted author and teacher Tom Brown, Jr.) and a chapter about Victor's talented brothers. There is a complete segment about the bass guitar which begins with the first known double basses of the early 1500's up to the electric version of Leo Fender made in 1951 to the ever-evolving basses of today. The chapter takes an in-depth look at what basses Victor has played throughout his career, and why, as well as discussion about strings, technique and amps.  Five Rings concludes with a masterful chapter about music in general and Victor's music in particular and what distinguishes Victor Wooten's style from so many others.

The appendix contains a complete discography, resource listing and a segment called Twenty Questions which answers the most heard inquiries about Victor, his personal life, influences and his music. Me and My Bass Guitar concludes with a beautifully written Afterward by the artist.

Me and My Bass Guitar is more than a biography about a talented musician and spiritual individual. There is wisdom within the story that suggests a life path which can be diverse yet harmonious with the rest of the world. There is a message of peace and hope within the words and magical music of Victor Wooten. This biography contains a key which could awaken inner awareness within the reader, turning the words into more than just empty puffs of air.

You will understand.
